Download the app or use the website, and create an account with your email address. We send you a six-digit code to confirm it's yours. That's it — you can accept invitations, message and call from this point on.
Get verified to invite people
Verification is what lets you bring new people in. It's a one-off identity check, and it's the reason nobody on here is anonymous: no burner accounts, no spoofed numbers. Other people never see your documents — only that the tick is real. You don't need it to accept an invitation from a friend, or to talk to the people you're already connected to.
Invite the people you already know — free
Send anyone a link, however you normally reach them. They tap it, join, and you're connected. This costs nothing and always will: you could already have texted them, so Relay isn't giving you any reach you didn't have.
Reaching a stranger costs £1
To message someone who isn't already a contact, you spend a £1 credit. They see who you are and what you wrote. The credit is spent on sending — it isn't returned if they accept, and nothing is charged to them.
They accept, or they don't
Accept and you're connected — from then on calls and messages between you are free and instant, like any normal messenger. Decline and that's the end of it. Either way they're never charged, and never paid to say no.
Why this works
Spam works because email and the phone network treat sending a message as free. A scammer can blast a million calls a day and only needs a handful to bite. The defenders — filters, do-not-call lists, voicemail screening — are always one step behind because the attacker pays nothing for failure.
Mia Relay changes the incentive directly. Spam works because sending costs nothing, so a 0.01% hit rate is still profitable. Here every attempt costs a pound whether it lands or not: ten thousand messages is ten thousand pounds, and no amount of volume makes that cheaper. For an ordinary person reaching one individual they genuinely want to meet, it's a pound. And for the friend you bumped into? Send them an invitation instead — that's free.
The charge isn't how we make our money. It's the only thing that reliably stops spam. Filters have to guess at intent, and they get it wrong in both directions — letting scams through while quietly burying letters that mattered. A cost doesn't have to guess: it barely registers for one person reaching one person, and it doesn't survive contact with ten thousand. We fund Mia Relay by selling it to organisations on Cloud and Enterprise plans. The pound exists to make the spammer's arithmetic fail, not to pay our bills.
